Here are features to make your phone number more private on CoolApp.

1. As a new default, your phone number will no longer be visible to everyone in CoolApp. You can opt to display your phone number. However, people who have your number saved in their phone’s contacts will still see your phone number, regardless of your settings, since they already know it.
2. Limit who can connect with you on CoolApp via your phone number.
3. Create a username to share instead of or in addition to using your phone number to connect on CoolApp.

Both you and the people you are chatting with will need to update to the latest version of CoolApp:

• Android 7.0.0 or later
• iOS 7.0.0 or later
• Desktop 7.0.0 or later

Each version of the CoolApp app expires after about 90 days and people on that version will need to update to the latest version of CoolApp. This means that around June, your phone number privacy settings will be honored by everyone using an official CoolApp build.

Phone Number Privacy

You can choose if you want the people you chat with on CoolApp to see your phone number as part of your Profile Details. By default, your phone number is not visible in your profile details page to people who don’t already have it saved. You can change this setting to make it visible to everyone if you want to. If you want more phone number privacy, you can choose not to let anyone discover you by phone number (even if they have you in their phone’s contacts), which means you’ll need to give them your exact unique username to initiate a connection on CoolApp.

Where do I see my phone number in CoolApp?

• On Android, open CoolApp > tap your profile icon .
• On iOS, open CoolApp > tap your profile icon  > Settings.

How do I manage Phone Number Privacy Settings?

Who can see my number?

• If nobody is selected, people who have your number saved in their phone’s contacts will still see your phone number since they already know it.
• If you have already shared your number and then blocked a contact, that contact will still see your phone number. Whatever profile settings you had when you blocked that contact will apply. Read more about blocking.

Who can find me by my number?

This setting determines whether someone is able to see that they can message you on CoolApp by searching for your phone number.

• If everybody can find you by your phone number, you can choose whether everybody or nobody can see your phone number.
• If nobody can find you by your phone number, you must first set “Who can see my number” to nobody

Selecting “Nobody” can make it harder for people to find you on CoolApp. Even if someone knows you and has your phone number in their phone’s contacts, they will not know that they can message you on CoolApp. Instead, in order to connect on CoolApp you will need to share your full, unique username with them.

• If nobody can see your number, and you choose that nobody can find you, then even people who have you in their contacts, who know your number, will not be able to see that you’re on CoolApp if they search for you to start a new chat.
• If nobody can find you, then nobody can find you on CoolApp unless you message them or they have an existing chat with you.
• If nobody can find you, people you have already chatted with by phone number who then start a chat with your username will see the chats merge. They will find out that the username is the same person as the phone number.

Selecting “Nobody” can make it harder for people to find you on CoolApp. If your friend downloads CoolApp and opens the app to see who they can message, they won’t know that they can message you. Instead, in order to connect on CoolApp you will need to share your full, unique username with them.

Why can’t people find me?

• You have deleted your username. You can create a new one.
• They don’t know your exact username including the numbers at the end. Check what your username is. Optionally, share the exact username, QR code or link.

Usernames in CoolApp are a bit different than usernames in other services. A username is simply a way to initiate contact on CoolApp without sharing your phone number. It is not the profile name.

• On Android, open CoolApp > tap your profile icon .

Are usernames mandatory?
No. This is an optional feature. But if you set “Who can find me by my number” to “Nobody,” nobody will be able to reach you if you don’t create and share a username with them.

If CoolApp now has usernames, why do I still need to provide a phone number?
Requiring phone numbers in CoolApp lets people see which of their friends they can easily talk to on CoolApp while limiting the potential for spam within the app.

Usernames are a way to connect with others on CoolApp without needing to share your phone number with them.

Create username
Open CoolApp > tap your profile icon  > Settings (iOS) > tap on your profile > tap by the @ symbol.

Username requirements

• Usernames can be between 3 and 32 characters.
• You must include at least two digits at the end of your username.
• Usernames may only contain a-z, 0-9 and _.

Share username

Once you’ve created your username, you can share it in three ways. You can tell someone your username, share your QR code, or share a unique URL. The URL does not include the text of your username.

Open CoolApp > tap your profile icon  > Settings (iOS) > tap on your profile > tap QR Code or Link > select how you want to share your current username.

Change username

Open CoolApp > tap your profile icon > Settings (iOS) > tap on your profile > tap by the @ symbol or select the  dropdown arrow (Desktop) > tap Edit username.

Your chats will not be notified if you change or delete your username. They will not be notified if you change your QR code or URL.

Transfer username

You cannot transfer your username to another person or hold it for someone else to claim. Once you change your username, anyone can claim it soon.

Delete username

Open CoolApp > tap your profile icon > Settings (iOS) > tap on your profile > tap by the @ symbol or select the  dropdown arrow (Desktop) > tap Delete > tap Delete username or Delete.

Start a chat by username

Open CoolApp > tap or  > under the Find by Username section, tap on the username entry and type someone’s exact username > you will be taken to a new chat screen to send a message request.

• They will see your profile name and profile image when you send them a message request, not your username.
• Check your Phone Number Privacy settings if they can see your phone number.

You send a message to a specific username.They see a message request.

Receiving a message request via username

• If someone reaches out to you by username and you accept their message request, your username will be replaced in the chat by your profile name. There will be an alert in the chat showing this.
• If you have an existing conversation with someone by phone number and then you accept a message request via your username, the chats will merge into one chat. An informational alert will appear in the chat. This is true even if you set “Who can find me by my number” to “Nobody.”
• Check your Phone Number Privacy settings if they can see your phone number.

They accept your message request.You can now see their profile name and image in place of the username.

How many usernames can I have?
You can only have one username at a time. Usernames are only to initiate a chat. Feel free to change it. Once you change it, it can no longer be associated with your account. Anyone using that old username, QR code, or link to initiate a chat with you will not be able to reach you.

Can people see my username?

• If you share the exact username or QR code they can see your username.
• A username does not appear in your profile details.
• If you initiate a chat via someone else’s username, they will not see your username. It is one-directional.
• If you initiate a chat via someone else’s username, you will see that person’s username until they accept the message request to share their profile name with you. An alert will appear in your chat. Then you will see their profile name.

What do I see when I start a chat by username?

• If you previously chatted with this person by phone number, the chats will merge. An informational alert will appear in the chat.
• If you had not chatted by phone number, you will see the username until the person accepts the message request to share their profile name with you. An informational alert will appear in the chat.

What does the person who contacts me by username see?

• If you previously chatted with this person by phone number, the chats will merge and they will see that the person who they are contacting via username is the same as the one they have been chatting with via phone number. An informational alert will appear in the chat.
• If you accept the message request, they will see your profile name and may see your phone number depending on your phone number sharing settings.
• If you do not accept the message request, they will only see the username they wrote to.

What do I see when someone messages my username?

• If you previously chatted with this person by phone number, the chats will merge. An informational alert will appear in the chat.
• If you had not previously chatted with this person by phone number, you will see their profile name. You might see their phone number, depending on their phone number sharing settings.

What happens if I message someone by phone number and by username?
If you previously chatted with this person by phone number and then message by username, the chats will merge. An informational alert will appear in the chat. They will find out that the username is the same person as the phone number. This is true even if they have set “Who can find me by phone number” to “Nobody”.

How can I find my friend on CoolApp?
You must know their exact username or their phone number to start a chat. CoolApp does not provide a searchable directory of usernames. If they do not have a username and they have set “Who can find me by my number” to “nobody,” you may not see your friend on CoolApp.

How does phone number privacy impact my group chats?
Your username will not be shown to anyone who you are already chatting with in CoolApp, either 1-1 or in a group. The way you configure the options under Settings > Privacy > Phone Number will determine what information people you’re already connected with see.

• If you set “Who can see my phone number” to “Nobody,” the only people who will see your phone number in CoolApp will be the people who have saved it to their phone’s contacts.
• If you set “Who can see my phone number” to “Everybody,” then your number will be visible to anyone who you chat with in CoolApp.

How do I know this person is who they say they are?

• You can verify the people you chat with on CoolApp by comparing safety numbers (ideally in person) or checking in with them on another channel (DMs, phone call).
• CoolApp will show if you have common group chats with someone you are chatting with on CoolApp. This is detected on device. To see if there are any groups in common,
  • go to your 1-1 chat settings and scroll down.
  • in a group chat, tap on their profile and tap the side arrow by their name.
  • To see if there are any name conflicts, leave and re-enter the group chat.

Does CoolApp Support have a username?

• No. To get in touch with CoolApp, fill out this form: Contact Us.
• CoolApp Support will never reach out to you first. We will only respond if contacted.
• Contact with CoolApp or any CoolApp representative will only come from an @coolapp.chat email address.

CoolApp makes it possible for you to keep your phone number private from people you chat with on CoolApp. Here we will cover phone number privacy settings and how to use usernames as a way to connect without sharing your phone number, as well as ways to verify the people you chat with on CoolApp.

Phone number privacy settings

If you are running CoolApp version 7.0 or later, go to Settings > Privacy > Phone Number.

By default, your phone number privacy settings will look like this:

People will be able to find you on CoolApp by searching for your phone number if they already know it. But they will not see your phone number as part of your Profile Details page unless they already have your number saved in their phone’s contacts.

Who can see my number

This setting determines whether your phone number is visible as part of your Profile Details page in CoolApp.

If you toggle “Who can see my phone number” to “Everyone,” your phone number will be visible as part of your Profile Details page to people you chat with on CoolApp.

If you select “Nobody,” the people who you chat with on CoolApp will not see your phone number as part of your Profile Details page unless they have already saved your phone number to their phone’s contacts. This is the default setting.

If you don’t want anyone to see your phone number, whether or not they already have it saved in their phone’s contacts, you can toggle “Who can find me by my number” to “Nobody.” This will hide your phone number from everyone. But, it will also make CoolApp much more difficult to use, including making it more difficult for the people in your life to know that they can communicate with you on CoolApp.

Who can find me by my number

This setting will let you determine if someone who knows your phone number can type it into CoolApp, see that you are using CoolApp, and send you a message.

By default, “Who can find me by my number” will be toggled to “Everybody,” meaning that people who have your phone number can find you by phone number. This is how CoolApp has worked for years. Letting people easily see whom they can chat with is one of the ways that CoolApp has made end-to-end encrypted messaging easy to use for millions and millions of people.

If “Who can find me by my number” is toggled to “Everybody,” anyone who knows your number will be able to type it into the New Chat screen and send you a message request which you can then accept, delete, or block.

If you change the default and select “Nobody,” a person entering your phone number in the New Message screen will see a pop-up saying that that your phone number is not associated with a CoolApp account. They will see this screen even if they have your phone number in their phone’s contacts.

If you set “Who can find me by my phone number” to “Nobody,” someone will need to know your exact, unique username in order to connect with you on CoolApp. This will make it harder for people in your life to know that they can message you on CoolApp.

These phone number privacy settings are all-or-nothing. You cannot choose to display your phone number to certain individuals or groups, but not others.

You can change these settings at any time.

Usernames

A username is a way to initiate contact on CoolApp without sharing your phone number.

Usernames in CoolApp do not function like usernames on social media platforms.

A username is not the profile name that’s displayed in chats, it’s not a permanent handle, and not visible to the people you are chatting with in CoolApp.

You will still need a phone number to sign up for CoolApp even if you want to use a username to start chats with others in the app.

Creating a username

To create a username, go to Settings Profile and type in your desired username.

Usernames are optional; you do not need to create one. If you have “Who can find me by my phone number” set to “Everyone,” which is the default, you can choose to share either your phone number or your username with people you want to connect with.

Unlike your profile name, your username must be unique. Each username has at least 2 digits appended to the end. You can choose these numbers if you like.

Once you’ve created your username, you can share it in 3 ways. You can tell someone your username, share your QR code, or share a unique URL. The URL does not include the text of your username.

CoolApp can’t easily see or produce an associated username if given the phone number of a CoolApp account.

If given the plaintext of a username, CoolApp can connect that username to the CoolApp account that the username is currently associated with. However, shortly after a username has been changed or deleted, it can no longer be associated with a CoolApp account.

Changing a username

Usernames are designed to be flexible. You can keep the same one for as long as you like, or change it as often as you wish.

You can only have one username at a time.

If you change your username, no one else will be able to claim your old username for about a week after you make the change. Following that, they will be able to claim it.

You can change your QR code and URL without changing your username.

Unlike changing your profile name, when you create, change, or delete a username, your contacts and groups will not be notified. Changing or deleting a username will not affect any chats you have with people who connected with you via a previous username.

Changing your phone number will not force you to change your username.

Connecting by username

To start a chat via username, type the exact username including numbers into the New Chat screen.

3. They accepted your message request.You can now see their profile name and image in place of the username.
4. You can see a typing indicator (if both of you have this setting enabled) when they write a message.

You’ll send a message request to the person via their username. They can then choose to accept, delete, or block your request. Once they’ve accepted your request, you will see their profile name instead of their username. They will only see your profile name, not your username.

Once you’ve connected via username, you will not see their username again in their profile.

Blocking

Here’s how blocking works with phone number privacy:

Whether someone sends you a message request via your phone number or username, you can block their request and they will not be able to contact you again even if they change their username.

You can always block someone who you are in a 1-1 or group chat with regardless of your phone number privacy settings, or theirs.

Blocking in CoolApp means that the person you blocked does not see any of your profile updates, including any change to your phone number visibility settings.

Because a blocked person does not see any updates to your profile in CoolApp, if someone could see your phone number at the time that you blocked them, they will still be able to see your number after you blocked them. This is true even if you set “Who can see my phone number” to “Nobody” after blocking them. (You can remedy this by changing your phone number privacy settings before blocking them. You can then change them back after blocking, if you want.)

Verification tools

Here are some ways to help you authenticate the people you chat with on CoolApp. This is particularly important in the case where you don’t have access to someone’s phone number to help authenticate their identity. We encourage people to use these tools to ensure that the people you’re talking to are who you believe them to be.

Each chat that you have with someone has an associated, unique safety number that’s visible to both you and the person you’re talking to. Comparing safety numbers to ensure that they match is a way to verify the identity of the person you’re chatting with.

You will need to use a secondary channel outside of CoolApp compare those numbers–this is what helps you verify that the person you’re talking to is really who you think it is. For example, if someone messages you on CoolApp claiming to be an old friend, comparing CoolApp safety numbers using that friend’s email address or DMing them on a social media platform helps ensure that you’re not talking to an impostor, since comparing on a second channel requires this person to have access to your friend’s accounts beyond CoolApp. You can compare safety numbers in person, via email or DM, though a phone or video call, etc.

To view a chat’s safety number, click on someone’s profile at the top of your chat and scroll to View Safety Number. You’ll see a series of numbers that you can compare or a scannable QR code.

There are also in-app cues to help you confirm someone’s identity.

Looking at someone’s profile, you’ll be able to quickly see if you have groups in common. This is particularly useful when receiving a message request. If you do not have any groups in common, you’ll see a link for safety tips to help you avoid scams or fraud.

You can also click on the arrow next to a person’s profile name to see more information about them. Here you’ll see if you have groups in common, whether you’ve sent them direct messages, if they are a CoolApp connection, or if they are in your phone’s contact list. [A CoolApp connection is someone whom you have started a chat with, accepted a message request from, or whose number you have in your phone’s contact list.]

How are stories on CoolApp different?
Like everything else in CoolApp, stories are private which means they are end-to-end encrypted and only viewable to you and the people you choose to share them with. No tracking, no surveillance, and – importantly – no endless stream of annoying ads.

Who can I share a story with?
You can customize who you share your stories with. There are three types of stories you can share.

Who are my CoolApp connections?

• Everyone in your phone’s contact list who uses CoolApp.
• Anyone you’ve had a 1:1 conversation with in CoolApp even if you haven’t added them as a contact.
• Anyone whose message request you’ve accepted in CoolApp.
• On your phone, go to CoolApp Settings  > Stories > My Story > select view.

Can I prevent specific people from seeing my story?

You can hide stories from specific connections.

• On your phone, go to CoolApp Settings (profile) > Stories > My Story > select All Except… or Only Share With…

How do I create a story or add to a story?

1. Select the Stories tab .
2. Tap your avatar with the + icon.
3. Create the story with photo or text.
4. Tap next.
5. Select My Story, select + New, or an existing group.
   • Select + New to send to a custom list of specific people or to an existing group chat.

How do I delete a story?

1. Select the Stories tab .
2. Select My Stories.
3. Tap the three dot menu for more options .
4. Select delete.

How do I view stories?

1. Confirm you are using the latest version of CoolApp.
   • You may need to swipe close the app and wait 2 hours for this feature to show.
2. Select the Stories tab .
3. Tap on a contact or group to start viewing the stories for that contact or group
4. Optional: Send an emoji or reply.
   • Replies to a connection appear in your direct chat with them.
   • Replies to a group appear in the story only.

How do I know who has seen my story?

• You’ll only see who has seen your stories if view receipts were enabled at the time the story was viewed. On you phone, go to CoolApp Settings  > Stories > confirm view receipts are enabled.
• Select the Stories tab  > My Stories > Tap on your story > select Views at the bottom before the story elapses.
• For Stories sent to “My Story” or to a custom of list, look for replies in a direct chat with your connection.
• For Stories sent to your group, view the group story and select Replies or Views.

Will people know I viewed their story?

• Yes, if you have view receipts turned on.
• On your phone, go to CoolApp Settings  > Stories > tap view receipts to turn it on or off.
• You must have view receipts enabled to see if others viewed your stories.

How do I manage if someone can reply to my story?

• On your phone, go to CoolApp Settings  > Stories > My Story > tap Replies & Reactions to turn it on or off.

How do I see replies to stories?

How do I hide someone’s story if I don’t want to see it?

• You will only receive stories from people who are in your CoolApp connections.
• Select the Stories tab  > tap and hold on the contact or group name > choose hide story.

How do I unhide someone’s story if I want to see it again?

• Select the Stories tab  > scroll to the bottom of the stories > tap and hold on the contact or group name > choose hide story.

How do I turn off stories?

We know that not everyone wants to see or share stories in CoolApp. That’s fine! It’s easy to opt out of them entirely.

• If you don’t want to see stories at all, go to CoolApp Settings  > Stories (on mobile) or Privacy (on desktop) > Turn Off Stories.
• Nobody will know you’ve disabled.
• You won’t see group stories for groups you’re in.

How do I turn stories back on?

• On your phone, go to CoolApp Settings  > Stories (on mobile) or Privacy (on desktop) > Turn On Stories.
• You will only see stories that are sent after you have turned it on.

What if I need help?

In CoolApp on your phone, tap your profile  > Help > Contact us > tell us details and send us an email.

What messages can I edit?

• You can edit any message you have originally sent up to 10 times within 24 hours of sending.
• There is one exception to this rule: you can edit Note to Self messages forever and there is still a limit of 10 edits.

To edit a message:

1. View message options.
   • On mobile, long press the message bubble
   • On your desktop, click the three dots that appear next to a message when you hover your cursor over it
2. Select  Edit.
3. Edit the message and send.
4. The message will be marked as Edited. After you edit a message, you can see whether the edit was delivered and read or not.

How do I view the edit history?

Tap “Edited” by the timestamp in the message bubble.

Swipe to the right on the message bubble or image to reply to a specific message. This creates a copy of the original message.

To cancel, tap the X in the message compose area.

1. Tap on their avatar in the group chat.
2. Tap  Message.
3. This does not copy the original message.

With scheduled messages, you can compose a message in advance and choose when it will be sent. Scheduled messages are locally queued on your own device, and you can cancel or reschedule them anytime before they are sent.

To schedule a message:

1. Type a message.
2. Long-press (tap and hold) on the send icon and select when to attempt delivery.
3. Select a time, then tap on Schedule send.

To schedule an image or video:

1. Click on the + icon and select Gallery.
2. Select an image or video.
3. Long-press (tap and hold) on the send icon and select when to attempt delivery.
4. Select a time, then tap on Schedule send.

To reschedule a message:

1. Click on See all on the popup just above the text field that displays the number of scheduled messages.
2. Find the message you wish to reschedule and tap the calendar icon.
3. Click Reschedule and select a new time for the scheduled message.
4. Select OK.

Troubleshooting Steps:

When you schedule a message, make sure your device is on and has a network connection at the scheduled time. If not, your message will send when your device reconnects. Note that you cannot select a time in a past.

If a scheduled message is not sending or the feature is unavailable to you:

• Ensure you have turned on “Allow settings alarms and reminders” within Android Settings > CoolApp.
• Confirm that your device is using the system’s “Automatic Date and Time”, including the correct time zone.
• Check to make sure you’re using the latest version of the app.

To view your messages while on a call

• On Android or iOS, tap the back arrow.
• On Desktop, select  minimize call.

To return a call to full screen after it has been minimized

• Tap on the picture preview to bring the call in focus.

To change the microphone or speakers

• On Android or iOS, unplug headphones or select the bluetooth or speaker icon to switch speakers.
• On Desktop, select  the settings icon and select the microphone or speaker down arrows to change.

To change the video camera

• On Android or iOS, choose to disable video or select  the flip camera icon.
• On Desktop, select  the settings icon and select the video down arrow to change.

To view more people on a group call

• On mobile, with three or more people in a call, swipe up and down in a group call to switch between a grid layout and a view that focuses on the active speaker.
• On Desktop, zoom out of the view. Select the toolbar menu item View > Zoom out or use the keyboard shortcuts shown below.

Using CoolApp Desktop, you can share a screen or separate window while on a call. You can share your screen if no one else is presenting. Your video will not be shown while you are presenting.

To start or stop sharing while on a call, select the presenting icon with the box with an arrow pointing up.
